Sitting with Your Feelings in Faith

In our virtual community, many are discovering that recognizing and sharing their emotions is both challenging and deeply transformative—especially if we haven’t been taught how to truly feel or express these feelings. It’s natural to feel uneasy or scared when you begin to open up. But doing so even when scared, with patience and gentle self-compassion, encourages growth.

If you are unsure of What it means to “Sit with Your Feelings” Here is a reminder from The Power of Naming your Feelings from a previous blog.

What does it really mean to feel? It’s about allowing yourself to experience your emotions fully, without judgment or suppression. This process is the cornerstone of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and overall well-being. While it may seem simple on the surface, embracing your feelings often requires a shift in how you relate to your emotional landscape. Think of it as a vital step toward authentic living and inner peace.

So, what does it mean to sit with your feelings, particularly through faith? It’s about creating space for God’s presence to meet you in your emotional experience. It’s about acknowledging your feelings without judgment and trusting that all of your emotions—joy, pain, frustration, gratitude—are part of your spiritual journey. This practice can deepen your faith, helping you align your emotional awareness with your spiritual growth.

Practical Steps to Recognize Your Feelings

  • Pray and Practice Mindfulness: Dedicate moments daily to prayer, reflect and breathing. Invite God to guide your understanding of what you’re feeling.

  • Use Your FAF Reflective Journal: Write honestly about your emotions to connect your feelings, emotions and healing through your faith.

  • Name Your Emotions With Faith: Recognize feelings such as gratitude, disappointment, anxiety, or peace—and consider what they reveal about your trust and needs in God.

  • Accept with Grace: Release judgment and shame surrounding your feelings, trusting that God accepts you fully, regardless of your emotional season.

  • Express and Share: Find safe ways to open up—through prayer, journaling, or community conversations—allowing vulnerability and receiving support.

  • Invite Divine Guidance: Ask God to help you understand, process, and heal your emotions, trusting in His loving presence..

By intentionally acknowledging and sitting with your feelings in God's presence, you open doors to deep healing and renewed faith. Remember, your emotional journey is a vital part of your spiritual growth. With patience, self-compassion, and divine guidance, you can navigate your feelings confidently, trusting that God's love surrounds you in every season. Embrace this transformative process, knowing that in faithful openness, you draw closer to the fullness of God's grace and presence.
